  • "We Own This City" on HBO is pretty good.

Made by David Simon and set in Baltimore (like two of his well-known previous works, The Wire and Homicide: Life on the Streets), it takes a pretty nuanced look at the issues of modern policing. A lot of familiar faces from The Wire, though they're playing different characters.

    • Since I watched it on TV, I say here that Matrix Resurrections certainly is a different movie--different from other movies but also from the first 3. Not quite sure what to make of it. Neil Patrick Harris reprises his Starship Troopers personna almost perfectly, I will say that much. Much grittier. Not a lot of magic. But I think worth another look or two.

Of course we find the machines haveSPOILER figured out a way of powering their Matrix by rebooting Neo and Trinity, placing them in pods in proximity but not touching, and harnessing the power of their unrequited love.

      • Finished Atlanta. What a season! I had to read a couple of blog posts to fully understand the last episode. That show is rich with references to literature and classic movies. It's one of the most amazing things I've ever seen on TV. Every episode sticks with me somehow.

I'll have t o check this out...loved the original. Do they still do the "I'm going to crush your head" routine?

Oh yes. He holds Toronto hostage by threatening to crush the CN Tower ...

              No Chicken Lady, tho.

There is also an accompanying documentary that is worth watching too.

I made the mistake of watching the first episode of Minx (meh, haven't gone back to it) and the first episode of KitH the same day. So much cock. Unwelcome. But KitH is worth sticking with. Still so great.

I feel like we have. I'm not generally a big Danny McBride fan, but I love that show. Big Baby Billy!

Borders on being great, as well as a little strange that it could be factual. Don’t miss the last 5 minutes where the producers/actors discuss things. We were disappointed that we couldn’t watch the next episode even though it was already 11:30.

          • Johnny Rotten is not down with the new Sex Pistols series. I haven't watched it yet.

Yeah, I haven't watched it either. I'm generally Team Rotten, but it's hard to know exactly what went down. Lydon usually says exactly what he thinks but I have no idea if what he thinks and what actually happened are the same thing.

Based on what I know of the other Pistols, though, I can see where they might have tried to skew the image.

I am generally Team Rotten, too. I'm sure he embellishes from time to time, but he generally seems like a no-bullshit type of guy. He really was the band. Sid couldn't even play bass and didn't on the albums.

          • My wife and I just happened upon "Candy" on Hulu - starring Jessica Biel as Candy Montgomery, who some of you might remember as the woman up in Collin County who murdered the wife of the man she was having an affair with back in 1980.

If you're unfamiliar with the story, Texas Monthly ran an engrossing series of stories documenting it that ought to whet your appetite to see it adapted for the small screen. I think they did a great job, and it's just 5 episodes so it's not a massive time commitment.

Oh, and in the world where there can be two asteroid movies at the same time or two Wyatt Earp movies at the same time, HBO is also planning their own mini-series based on the true story - which is due out sometime later this year.

Bug’s Life and Antz came out at roughly the same time, too. It’s a weird phenomenon.

Oh, wait... I didn't understand the assignment

          • Hacks on HBO Prime or whatever it's called. A "cancelled" Gen Z female comedy writer reluctantly takes on a job writing for a fading boomer female stand-up comic. I made it though one season and never embarked on the second. I tried hard to care about the characters but never really could. Jean Smart is good as the boomer lady comedian.

Plan Coeur (The Hookup Plan) on Netflix. French comedy/drama about a lonely late-20s-ish woman whose friends set her up with a male escort. This one was fantastic and went way, way beyond the fairly simple premise. Really an excellent show if you don't mind reading subtitles. It's over now, and all seasons are on Netflix as far as I can tell. I loved it.

              • Couple of weeks ago, I had some spare time. Since it was raining, I couldn't work outside. Meanwhile, the fiancee was running errands and the boy was doing his karate lesson. Figured I'd sit down and enjoy the start of Season 3 of The Boys.
Fiancee gets home and sits down on the couch with me during the second episode. She ended up watching it. After, she tells me she really liked it.

So, now I'm rewatching seasons 1 & 2 with her so I can continue season 3.

As someone who is naturally inclined to not really like superhero movies, The Boys feels like it was made for me. It is the anti-super hero movie for a cynical post-truth age. The sex and graphic violence are so over the top it feels cartoonish rather than gratuitous ...

Yeah, it's based on a Garth Ennis comic series, which, if you know anything about Garth Ennis it's that he really dislikes superheroes. It's rare that he ever writes a superhero comic and even rarer for the super-powered people to come off looking good. He generally either turns them into stereotypical cartoon buffoons or monsters. Sometimes both.
He once had a long run on The Punisher. His forte is really historical war comics, that's what he really does best, but the Punisher is enough removed from being a superhero and more in line with military operations that Ennis had fun with it. However, superheroes did not go unmocked. He once had the Punisher fight Wolverine and had Wolverine doing all of the most basic Wolverine-y catchphrases and moves. Really made him goofy. Then he completely blew off Wolverine's face. Wolvie looked like some hillbilly terminator. AND THEN, he had the Punisher run over Wolverine with a steamroller.

                  You ever watch Preacher?
