I don't recall ever using that phrase...but on the other hand I don't recall a lot of things. I may have referred in the past to Robert Johnson singing

Nevertheless, I am a scholar of American roots music, how it evolved and developed from a culture of hardship and discrimination and the role it played within that culture. As root music, the blues is about as rootier as it gets and Robert Johnson was the King of the Delta Blues afterall. Much of the early blues had double meanings and were full of double-entendre, imagery and symbolism. It provided a "secret language" for blues singers to communicate about aspects of life and hardship that were often forbidden in polite society that they were all too often not allowed to be part of..
